An Intellectual Disability represents a person has some restrictions in the mental function and skills such as communications, taking care of self and social skills. The barricades limit the children development and learning ability more slowly than a normal child.

The intellectual disabilities of children (cognitive, mental retardation) may take longer time to learn to walk, speak or taking care of their personal needs. They will have trouble in school learning. Though they will learn it takes a long time than others. Some children may have the disability in learning. Some children with intellectual disabilities will have difficulty in interpretation, integration, and coordinating sensory input. Sensory integration activities help them to strengthen these abilities.

There are two kinds of sensory problems. Some kids will be hyperactive and they avoid activities like climbing stairs. They are commonly prone to mobility problem. They need others support for walking.

Some will be hypoactive and they have decreased sensory system. They may enjoy climbing and swinging but will never turn up with dizziness or spinning. Sensory integration activities deal with the children's sensory needs by either lessening or amplifying the sensory stimulation intensity they receive. Most sensory integration activities are related with children's vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile sensory systems.
